The Greater Vancouver Water District (GVWD) is constructing the Seymour-Capilano Filtration Plant (SCFP) within the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve.  The 16-hectare site will include one plant overflow detention pond and two stormwater detention ponds.  There is also an existing ‘frog pond’ on the site that is thought to be manmade.

In 2004, Acroloxus Wetlands Consultancy was contracted by the GVWD to review the current plans for the SCFP facility and to provide recommendations for the reduction of mosquito breeding opportunities on the SCFP site.  It was recommended that the stormwater detention ponds and the frog pond be maintained as wet ponds.  Not only were wet ponds deemed to be superior from a mosquito control perspective, but they would also provide additional benefits of aesthetic and recreational value, provision of habitat for listed species, protection of biodiversity, and improved water quality.

To date, the frog pond has been restored, and further construction is required on the remaining stormwater detention ponds.  To evaluate the progress being made on these ponds, Acroloxus Wetlands Consultancy is undertaking ongoing monitoring to assess the progress in meeting specific management objectives for the LSFP frog pond and stormwater detention ponds, including:

  •  Establishment of healthy native vegetation community around the new ponds

  •  Establishment of healthy invertebrate community in ponds

  •  Enhancement of aesthetic and recreational value of the site

  •  Control of nuisance and disease vector mosquitoes

  •  Maintenance of habitat to sustain healthy amphibian populations

  •  Provision of habitat for listed species, including the red-legged frog (Rana aurora)
