GIS Mapping Services
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a computer-based system used to store, view, retrieve, display and analyze geographic data. In a GIS, categories or layers of information and their descriptive attributes are combined to provide visual and quantitative answers to environmental questions.

Acroloxus Wetlands Consultancy offers a range of GIS services including:
  • Airphoto Interpretation
  • Application Development
  • Database Development
  • Map Production
  • Spatial Data Management
  • Spatial Modeling and Analysis

Mapping Wetland Communities - Integrated Mosquito Management Program (IMMP)

Over 50 different species of mosquitoes can be found in BC.
Of these, probably less that 10 are capable of passing on West Nile Virus.
Different species are found in different aquatic and terrestrial habitats.
We can create distribution patterns for each species by
evaluating factors such as:
  • habitat preferences
  • host preference
  • breeding grounds
  • migration
  • longevity

Mapping different vegetation types that mirror particular flooding
regimes and collecting larval and adult mosquitoes allows us to identify
the extent of potential breeding areas.

For example, recent research conducted in the Kootenay Lake area has shown that
the Aedes species breed predominantly in Low Bench areas, particularly on open grassland and riparian sandbars that are subject to intermittent flooding.

Once we have mapped the areas where different species are found, critical areas of concern can be identified and problems of control addressed, for example by:

  • encouraging invertebrate and vertebrate predator populations
  • best use of low impact abatement materials
  • landscaping re-design to reduce mosquito breeding habitat

With this information, we can also assess the West Nile Virus risk in the target location and surrounding areas.
