Acroloxus Wetland Consultancy has developed a comprehensive Restoration Program to assist our clients in undertaking all of the necessary steps in creating and implementing a wetland restoration plan. Our Program includes the following four phases:
Phase 1: Select and Map Restoration Site
- Collect information about past and present use of the site
- Record physical and biological information about the site
- Create comprehensive site map including soils, hydrology, flora, fauna and human features
Phase 2: Develop Restoration Plan
- Develop and refine objectives and target criteria
- Talk to agencies about regulations/permits
- Meet with stakeholders and identify important social and economic factors
- Define implementation methods to meet planning goals and objectives
- Research the physical requirements of appropriate native plant species
- Prepare designs, protcols and construction documents to direct implementation
Phase 3: Implement Restoration Plan
- Publicize and promote the project, and recruit volunteers
- Obtain permits, materials and equipment
- Prepare the site for human intervention
- Install plants, structures and other major features
- Co-ordinate work crews and volunteers
Phase 4: Adaptive Management
- Monitor target criteria established during planning
- Assess success in meeting targets
- Undertake maintenance activities
- Use adaptive management to adjust plans as needed
Ruby Lake Lagoon Wetland Restoration Project
In the Ruby Lake Lagoon Nature Reserve, on British Columbia's Sunshine Coast, Acroloxus is helping the non-profit Lagoon Society to develop and implement a comprehensive restoration plan for 10 acres of wetlands adjacent to the new Iris Griffith Interpretive Centre.
